What are ORG NET ORG.UK etc.. For?
ORG NET etc... were originally developed to help Internet users
distinguish between normal companies (com) and non-profit
organisations (org) or Internet related companies (net).
The problem is no one has really policed this system. What has
happened is people have bought the domain which is available which
closely matches their business. Many org net, org.uk domains have
been bought by companies despite them not being non-profit or
Internet related.
The country codes ie .uk, .fr, .pl etc are usually an indication of
where the company is located. Different countries have different
rules as to who can register their domains, so even some of these
can not be trusted all of the time. There are no doubt companies
who are registering specific country codes as it enhances their
domain name. For instance if you were running a Information
Technology company (IT) you may look at getting a website with the
IT domain (IT for Italy).
For a full list of European domains you could take a look at EuroDNS
we at Duo have never used them ( we like to stick to good
old co.uk and com ) but looking at Euro domain names may get you a
really catchy web address. Be careful though as some countries
insist you are based there, or you at least host your site there.
It can be tough enough speaking with techy types, imagine how bad
it could get speaking with Euro Techs?
